Are you thinking about proposing to that special someone? Planning the perfect at-home proposal can be an incredibly romantic way of asking your best friend to marry you! Continue reading as we share some of our favorite at home proposal ideas.
When asking wedding planner Jessica Clark at Blush by Brandee Gaar about at-home proposal ideas, she said “At the end of the day, the proposal really comes down to one thing, asking the love of your life to be with you forever. That being said, your significant other will literally be repeating this proposal story for the next 40 years, so it has to be special for them.”
The perfect proposal doesn’t need to be elaborate or over the top, but it does need to be one-of-a-kind and special.

Creative Ways to Plan a Proposal At Home
Regardless of the location for a wedding proposal, creativity is always key. Who doesn’t want to leave their partner completely shocked and surprised by the level of attention to detail and thought that went into popping the question!?
Consider thinking about your marriage proposal like a fancy date, just at home! You could be wearing cute and comfy pajama sets or fluffy slippers, but many of the other elements would be the same.
Cook Up Something Special
Since you’re home, consider making plans around a romantic dinner. Jessica Clark’s tip for romantic proposal ideas at home is to “cook them a nice dinner (or order in from their favorite restaurant), light candles, and prepare a speech about how much you love them. Celebrating your love at home, where the foundation is the strongest, is incredibly romantic.”
Grocery shopping apps like Instacart make it easy to order all of your ingredients ahead of time and have them delivered to your door, so you can leave plenty of time for romance!
Pour On The Love
Make sure to have a bottle of wine or prepare one of your partner’s favorite specialty drinks to go along with dinner! Some liquor stores, like ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, are now offering same-day delivery.
Plan a Fun Activity
Once dinner and drinks are taken care of, plan for some fun entertainment! You can play your favorite songs and have a little dance party, play a game, or do another fun activity together.
Many businesses are getting creative and offering at-home activity kits. Channel the famous pottery scene in Ghost and try out an at-home pottery kit, like this one from Crockd, or try this painting kit from Painting to Gogh.
If you are more of a dinner and a movie kind of couple, think about how you can take the typical movie-watching experience to the next level. How romantic would it be if you set up a movie projector outside with twinkling lights, candles, blankets, and pillows?! Your partner will feel like they are living out a romantic movie proposal in real-life!
Incorporate Your Furry Friend
Are you pet parents? Think about incorporating your fur baby into your at-home proposal. You could tie the ring around their collar, or have them wear a sweet sign asking that all-important question!
Planning a Holiday At Home Proposal
Another way to make your wedding proposal special is to wait for the right time and season. If your partner’s favorite season falls during fall or winter, use the season to inspire your creativity.
Make an entire evening themed around your partner’s favorite season. For a fall proposal, you could carve pumpkins, drink cider, or bake pumpkin treats together.
For a winter proposal, consider starting the evening with eggnog and Christmas music. Put on your favorite holiday movie, put up decorations, and wrap presents. When the time is right, present your sweetie with a special Christmas gift—the ring!
For many couples, having their close family and friends involved in their proposal is very important to them. The holidays provide the perfect time to have everyone in one place, without tipping your future fiancé off about what’s about to happen! This may be why 37% of all proposals happen between November and February, according to The Knot. That holiday cheer has many people in the spirit to get down on one knee!

Rent an Airbnb or Vacation Rental!
Nobody said a romantic at-home proposal had to happen at your own home. Airbnb and many other vacation rental services offer unique homes in incredible locations. So book a bungalow, penthouse, or even a treehouse and plan the ultimate weekend engagement getaway. Because you’ll be staying in a residential property, you’ll be able to capture that intimate “at-home” vibe, while also stepping outside of your normal routine and environment.
When planning a weekend getaway, Brittany Jones, owner of Uncorked Occasions, suggests you consider a few things before booking. “If you have plans to pop the question in a popular destination, you may need to consider current guidelines and closures. Are masks required? What other restrictions and precautions are in place?”
Being aware of what’s going on in that area will help you make the most of your trip. Although you’ll be out of town, you can still plan the ultimate “at-home proposal,” even if it’s not your home.
Look for ways that you can take advantage of the natural surroundings around your Airbnb or vacation rental. You can take a romantic bike ride, rent paddleboards, go to the beach, or go hiking together before the big proposal. Make sure to look into unique seasonal activities that are going on, such as the annual Nights of Lights holiday display in the historic district here in St. Augustine.
If you’re planning on visiting St. Augustine for a romantic proposal weekend at an Airbnb or vacation rental (which we highly recommend!) make sure to check out the Florida’s Historic Coast or VisitStAugustine.com websites for updates and information about what’s going on around town.
When you’re settled into your Airbnb or vacation rental and it’s time to propose, think about how you can make the moment special. Bring candles and wine, and have their favorite love song playing to help set the mood. Does your partner have a favorite movie or board game? Bring that along too!
Use an app like DoorDash, UberEats, or Postmates and create a unique dinner menu filled with the best food that the locals have to offer…and don’t forget an amazing dessert! If you want even more bonus points, pre-order fresh flowers, or balloons and plan for them to be delivered to the getaway location. Oh yeah, and most importantly, don’t forget to pack the engagement ring!

Home is Where The Heart Is
Planning a proposal can be intimate and romantic, even from the comfort of your own home (or someone else’s). Staying in rather than going out allows you to create a memorable experience that is tailored to you and your partner’s love story.
